The International New Town Institute’s workshop brings together examples of inspiring and provocative projects which have been designed and realised by citizens, as a radical alternative to the ‘top-down’ masterplan approach of designing the New Towns of the past.

Confirmed speakers include:

Jaap Meindersma (municipality Almere)
Almere Oosterwold, Almere
Oosterwold is an experimental urban planning scheme in which the municipality leaves (almost) everything to the future residents.

Jovanka Stoimenovski
De Warren Cooperative, Amsterdam
www.dewarren.co (in Dutch only)
Cooperative of about 50 people, realising a partly crowd funded neighbourhood of affordable housing in Amsterdam.

Alessandra Covini
Studio Ossidiana / Amsterdam
Prize winning poetic public space designs, alternative to modernist functional public space.

Jan Knikker
Jan joined MVRDV in 2008. Before this he started his career as a journalist, and then shaped the public image of OMA for nearly a decade. As Partner at MVRDV, Jan leads the Contracts, Business Development and Public Relations efforts, forming a client-oriented, fast, and strategic studio that includes a strong visualisation team and the practice’s sustainability team.
