For over fifty years, Milton Keynes has been a barometer for public art commissioning. As an integral part of the city’s vision and unfolding identity, the Milton Keynes Development Corporation and subsequently Milton Keynes Council with partners, have supported a variety of approaches to public art: stand-alone sculptures, murals, community arts projects, site-specific temporary projects and more recently a number of socially engaged commissions.

This day of conversations and discussions will reflect broadly on this expanding field in order to inform the development of a wider conference scheduled for Spring 2020. With regional, national and international examples of public art commissions which contribute to a city-making agenda, these conversations will explore how these kinds of projects can image new possibilities and open up more democratic and discursive spaces.

The conference will bring together regional, national and international examples where public art continues to be commissioned within a city-making agenda and will ask whether these kinds of projects can imagine new possibilities and open up a more democratic and discursive space.
