For over fifty years, Milton Keynes has been a barometer for public art commissioning. As an integral part of the city’s vision and unfolding identity, the Milton Keynes Development Corporation and subsequently Milton Keynes Council with partners, have supported a variety of approaches to public art: stand-alone sculptures, murals, community arts projects, site-specific temporary projects and more recently a number of socially engaged commissions.

Two days of presentations and workshops, will reflect broadly on this expanding field, taking Milton Keynes’s dynamic relationship to commissioning as a starting point to review changes in practice and intent.

The conference will bring together regional, national and international examples where public art continues to be commissioned within a city-making agenda and will ask whether these kinds of projects can imagine new possibilities and open up a more democratic and discursive space.
